Auto safety starts with a little common
sense. If you take a little time now to prepare
in advance, the reward could be great when an emergency
comes along.
First you should periodically inspect
your car to keep it in good operating condition.
Items which are simple but important could be:
-
check tire pressure (including
the spare)
-
check for tire wear
-
check fluid levels (oil, water,
washer fluids, etc.),
-
check wiper blades and have your
car serviced regularly.
Second, some thought should be given as to items
that you could keep in the car at al times. Some suggestions
are:
- Jug of water- for drinking, cleansing injuries,
radiator
- Light food items- granola bars, power bars, crackers
- Wet naps- general use
- First
Aid Kit- always essential
- Blankets
for emergency warmth
- Flashlight- be sure to have spare batteries
- Tow rope
- Jumper cables
- Fire extinguisher
- Tools
- Oil- you never know when you need it
- Flares or reflectors
- Mobile phone
The above are just suggestions. You should assess
the needs of your family and add specialty items accordingly.
Examples, does anyone in your family have special
needs, like an extra dose or two of their medicine,
pampers and formula for babies, etc.
Some of these items may be combined and included
in your 72 hour kit which some people like to keep
in their vehicles.
Mostly, it's just taking the time to prepare and
using your common sense. While you may not be happy
if you should get stranded, you will have the comfort
of knowing you are prepared.
