Tips for Seasoning, Care of your
Cast Iron Potjie Pot

Some Quick Tips:

  • Remember that the potjies are Pre-Seasoned when you buy them.
  • Rinse with boiling water before use.
  • Cleaning the pot - Fill the pot with warm water, let soak and then scour clean. Always dry the pot over a heat source.
  • Lightly grease with either vegetable oil or Crisco. Leave a dry paper towel inside to absorb moisture.

After each use and cleaning you should re-season your cast iron Potjie. Tradionally the use of a vegetable oil or Crisco has been used to wipe a thin layer on all surfaces to prevent rust and keep the pot seasoned and preserved. If you choose to use this method apply a very thin coat, enough to only change the sheen of the cast iron, any more will increase the likelihood of the oil or Crisco going rancid and this will effect the flavor of your next meal.

For this fact we recommend using a plant based conditioner for seasoning and a plant based cleaning agent when cleaning. Click here for seasoning and conditioner. This way you can be assured your next use will be odor free and ready for use. We also recommend storing your potjie pot with the lid ajar to allow for complete air circulation.
